Apheresis leukoreduction collars – a byproduct of platelet donation that provides high numbers of viable white blood cells (WBCs).
Collars are plastic tubing that is self contained in the machine so patient blood never touches the machine or centrifuge. WBCs are concentrated in the plastic.
Collars come from healthy platelet donors who have platelet apheresis to generate materials for transfusion. WBCs are spun out in the machine during the apheresis procedure, and are conetrated in the collars which can be provided to area investigators. The collars are anonymized off the machine so there is no patient data. you’ll only know that the individual met criteria to be a blood donor so was otherwise healthy.
